The birth of generative AI

The roots of generative AI can be traced back to the mid-20th century, when Alan Turing raised the question "Can machines think?" in his 1950 article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence". Early AI systems were rule-based and lacked the adaptability to mimic human inventiveness. It was Arthur Samuel who created the first machine learning algorithm for the board game checkers in 1952, and he introduced the term "machine learning". However, it wasn't until the 1980s when artificial neural networks enabled robots to learn and create.

In 2014, Ian Goodfellow presented Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a breakthrough that allowed AI systems to generate whole new data, such as images and sounds, by combining two neural networks: one to generate and one to assess. At the same time, large-scale pre-trained language models, like as OpenAI's GPT series, transformed text production. Using the transformational "transformer" architecture released in 2017, these models demonstrated remarkable fluency in text creation. So, while there are many valuable services available, there are also issues that must be solved through collaboration and continued development.
